The New Transverse–Facial Artery Musculomucosal Flap for Intraoral Reconstructions
نویسندگان
چکیده
1 BACKGROUND Head/neck cancer resections often require reconstruction to restore form and function. Small-to-medium size intraoral defects can be successfully reconstructed by local pedicled flaps, such as the facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap,1 which encompasses different layers: cheek mucosa and submucosa, the underlying layer of the buccinator muscle, a portion of the orbicularis oris close to the labial commissure, and the facial artery.2 The flap is usually outlined longitudinally over the facial artery course, and average size is 5 × 2.5 cm. We describe here an innovative flap design and dissection, apt to treat larger defects than the usual ones.

Reconstruction of oral cavity defects with FAMM (facial artery musculomucosal) flaps. Our experience.
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap is a good option for covering small and medium-sized defects in the oral cavity because of its similar tissue characteristics and easy implementation. METHODS We reviewed our results using this flap between 2006 and 2014. A total of 20 patients were included and 25 FAMM flaps were performed, 16 right (64%) and 9 left (36...

Introduction: Reconstruction of intraoral soft tissue defects is important in restoring function and esthetic. In large defects, there will be demand for regional pedicle flaps or free flaps. Hard palate separates nasal and oral cavities. Due to the small surface area between flap and remaining palate after surgical resections, optimal blood supply of the flaps for hard palate reconstructions ...
متن کاملBuccinator musculomucosal flap: applications in intraoral reconstruction.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of the buccinator musculomucosal flap in the reconstruction of defects of the oral cavity and oropharynx. DESIGN Prospective case series of 8 patients during a 1-year period with an average follow-up of 1 year. Six anatomical dissections were performed on 3 fresh cadaver heads to investigate the neurovascular supply to the flap. SETTING Academic tertiary referr...
متن کاملRandom Pattern Vertically Oriented, Partial Thickness Buccinator Myomucosal Flap for Intraoral Reconstruction: A Report of Two Cases
Introduction: Reconstruction of the oral cavity witha flap design containing the buccal mucosa and buccinator muscle but excluding the facial artery and vein is the topic of these case reports. Case Reports: This article uses random pattern vertically oriented partial thickness buccinator myomucosal flap for intraoral reconstruction in two cases. The first was for lining the mandibular anterior...
متن کاملFacial artery musculomucosal flap for reconstruction of skull base defects: a cadaveric study.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Failure in skull base defects reconstruction following tumor resection can have serious consequences such as ascending meningitis and pneumocephaly. The nasoseptal flap showed a very low incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leak but is not always available. The superiorly pedicled facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap has been successfully used for reconstruction of head an...
